SILENCING THE ACCUSER
TAKING IT IN
A soul hard pressed by the accuser; that is the focus of Psalm 119:154.
Though the author of Psalm 119 is not mentioned, older commentators almost all agree that it is a Psalm of David, composed throughout his entire life. It certainly is possible as we know that there were many enemies that came against him. In Psalm 35:1 it was David who cried
When we are unjustly accused we must identify the TRUE ACCUSER! Revelation 12:10 is clear
Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
Many Christians are unaware of the lies Satan, the accuser, whispers in their ears. Not only does he accuse believers, but he deceives them concerning their relationships with God and also their identities, and he speaks falsely concerning God and His love for His children. When we are in the thick of battle, it is easy to lose ground and entertain the lies of the enemy. We are no match for the accuser in our flesh — the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God. Often we become our own worst enemy as we seek to “plead” our own cases.
David is asking the Lord to become directly involved on his behalf. What better Advocate is there? It is as if David is saying, “Stand up for me and declare that I have been righteous”. If there be fault found within me, declare it; but if no fault then plead my just cause. David has alluded throughout this Psalm that the wicked have set their eyes on him for his destruction. What was their reason?
Would it surprise you to know there wasn’t a good reason?
If you are a Christian who is seeking to follow God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, you too will be targeted, not because of what you have done, but because of Whose you are.
But our mindset during times of weakness and attack is critical to our victory. There are times when Satan doesn’t need a human vehicle to attack and he comes to launch a personal assault on our minds. The truths of who God is and who we are in Christ must be cemented in our hearts and minds to be victorious over the tormenting thoughts of accusation and self-condemnation. A battle is waged for truth.
My heart for women in this area caused me to write a message called “Truly Beautiful” based on the Book of Ephesians. Too many women had come to me in counseling struggling with defeat in their Christian life having listened one too many times to the accuser. I had the opportunity to bring the conference and God’s truth to many churches and watch the truth of God’s Word set women free.
MAKING IT MEANINGFUL
What is important to note here is that the Psalmist recognized that within his frail human heart and his vulnerability to react in the flesh, he was unable to defend himself. He knew that he needed God to plead his cause; he knew he needed God to redeem him. “Plead my cause” uses language from the courtroom. The Psalmist asked God to defend him as a lawyer might. Glean from this deep insight by Pastor and Theologian Charles Bridges:
“Awful indeed was the cause which He had to manage. Our adversary had the law on his side. We could not deny the charge, or offer satisfaction . . . But at that moment of infinite peril, our cause was pleaded by a ‘Counselor’ (Isaiah 9:6), who never was nonsuited in court, who brought irresistible pleas, and produced satisfaction that could not be denied.”
“But you say, – ‘How do I know that He speaks for me?’ Yet if not for you, then for whom does He speak? Who needs an Advocate more than you? He pleads nothing favorable of you; but much, very much, for you. For He pleads the merit of His own blood.”
Our plea – the blood of Christ — we plead the blood, the life giving blood!
As we seek to be revived we must be fully armored and know who we are as women in Christ. Our identities need to line up with what Scripture teaches in order to silence our accuser who comes against these truths in a daily effort to get us to buy into his lies. Christ’s work on the cross must be embraced and believed. When we neglect the greatness of our salvation and what the Word of God teaches we open our minds up to believe every accusation of the enemy.
And when our character is attacked, we can either stand on these truths about God and our identity in Him or we can succumb to the lies of the enemy and risk losing our Christian witness.
WORKING IT INTO MY HEART
God’s Word is the answer; it is the only way to be revived! It is where we discover who He is, who we are and His amazing plan and purpose for our lives.
The “case” of sin has been won by the blood of Christ; you have been redeemed so why stay in jail? Your freedom was won and you walk from a position of victory – so don’t fall into unbelief and self-condemnation.
It is one thing when the enemy uses others to come against us, it is quite another when we allow the enemy to accuse us; to steal and rob us of the glorious truths about God and who we are in Him!
God has given us His Word – the sword of the Spirit that we might always be armed with truth. It is our responsibility to take the sword and fight!
Below are some of the struggles I have sought to help women overcome. Take some time this week to be sure you are silencing the accuser and that you are walking in the truth of who God is and who you are in Him so that when THE ENEMY USES others to come against you, your footing will be sound and sure!
- Are you haunted by past failures?
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! (Isa. 43:18-19)
- Do you have this question, “Can God really forgive me?”
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1Jn. 1:9)
- Do you fear the Lord is always angry with you?
The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. (Ps. 103:8-10)
- Do you see the discipline of the Lord because of the sins you have committed show God’s hatred toward you?
- Are you thinking your sins can never be blotted out?
The blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1Jn. 1:7)
As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Ps. 103:12)
- Are you feeling hopeless?
But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isa. 40:31)
- Are you condemning yourself?
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Rom. 8:1) For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. (1Jn. 3:20, NKJV)
- Is the enemy of your soul condemning you?
Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died– more than that, who was raised to life — is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. (Rom. 8:34)
- Do you see yourself trapped in any temptation without redemption?
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1Cor. 10:13)
- Do you feel cut off from God because of your sins?
For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. (1Pet. 3:18)
