Time Management, Spiritual Growth, Discipleship

Who you gonna call? Ghost Busters!

Remember the team of scientists who left their cushy positions to wage a high tech battle against the supernatural? They were on a mission to bust some ghosts! Likewise, it’s time we bust some habits in our lives that simply waste time!

Moses prayed, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12).” The Living Bible translation adds more insight, “Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.” Moses is a wise man. He understands that life is short and it is possible to waste entire days of time, not spending it as we should.

Time Busters are are not evil, in and of themselves, but they present a real danger if we are not able to control the time we spend using them. Let’s consider a few that are top on the list. First, social media, which includes, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Second, technology, our smart phones, I-Pads, and I-pods. Third up is entertainment; television, the internet, games, and movies,

When do these things take on the nature of a time buster? When you find yourself addicted to Candy Crush, taking quizzes to find out what Bible character you are, reading trending articles with the latest Hollywood gossip. Definitely, when you’ve just taken your 10th selfie in one day! Days spent watching your favorite season of a television show you enjoy.

Unusual suspects? Hours spent going through your junk mail, extra lengthy telephone conversations, continual organizing and reorganizing, and yes, you can spend too much time with your coupons and scrapbooks!

Often to escape our emotions and the things which concern us, we turn to mindless activities that will allow us to veg. Instead, we should bring our feelings and burdens to Jesus. We should come away to His Word and allow Him to fill the emptiness in our hearts. We should meet with a friend for coffee enjoy sweet fellowship, and stir one another to love and good works.

If we want to be taught to number our days, we must challenge ourselves with two good questions:

How can I be more fruitful with my time?

What am I trying to avoid doing while wasting my time?

Take some time this week to bust out those things which are robbing you of precious time. Be honest in answering these two questions. Being intentional about how you spend your time is key. I want to end with a great message I recently listened to a message about how busy women can memorize Scripture Listen Now. I promise you, it is worth your time to listen!
